Acronyms explained

3G 3G refers to the third generation of developments in wireless technology, especially mobile communications.
CSIR The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organisations in Africa.
EGNOS The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service is Europe's first venture into satellite navigation.
EC The European Commission is the executive body of the European Union. Its primary roles are to propose and implement legislation, and to act as 'guardian of the treaties' which provide the legal basis for the European Union.
ESA The European Space Agency is Europe's gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe.
Galileo Galileo will be Europe's own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control.
GLONASS The Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) is a radio-based satellite navigation system, developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. Its United States' counterpart is the Global Positioning System (GPS).
GNSS Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. A GNSS allows small electronic receivers to determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) to within a few metres using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites. Receivers on the ground with a fixed position can also be used to calculate the precise time as a reference for scientific experiments.
GPRS General Packet Radio Service is a mobile data service utilised for services such as WAP access, SMS and MMS, but also for Internet communication services such as email and web access.
GPS The Global Positioning System is a fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). GPS has become an indispensable aid to navigation around the world, and an important tool for map-making and land surveying.
GSM The Global System for Mobile Communications is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. The ubiquity of the GSM standard makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world.
INCO International cooperation activities which form part of the European Union's Framework Programmes.
LEOP In spacecraft operations, the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) is one of the most critical phases of a mission. Spacecraft operations engineers take control of the satellite after it separates from the launch vehicle up to the time when the satellite is safely positioned in its final orbit.
SAC The CSIR Satellite Applications Centre (SAC) provides world-class telemetry, tracking and command (TT&C) services, disseminates low and medium-resolution satellite data via various media and ensures the archiving of earth observation data that are deemed to be in the public domain.
SADC The Southern African Development Community (SADC) comprising nine member states.
Satcom Satellite communication (Satcom) is an artificial satellite stationed in space for the purposes of telecommunications. Satcom are used for mobile applications such as communications to ships and planes, for which application of other technologies, such as cable, are impractical or impossible.
TT&C Telemetry, tracking, command (TT&C) provides mission support to near-earth satellites and launch vehicle missions.
